Interview Tip: The Problem with STAR (and a better way to approach it)

The STAR Model is a common way to approach an interview question, but it has an inherent problem. Namely, the most important piece of information - ie. the result - comes at the end. This video introduces a new model that works even better. I call it the VSD Interview Model and there are 3 parts:

V - Value First - Your first sentence needs to explain the business value of what you did
S - Short (ie. Keep it Short) - The 30 second to 1 minute "Executive Summary" version of your story
D - Detail on Demand - Ask a question to see if the interviewer wants more detail. Only give it if they want it.

This video explains how it works.
  • Interview Tip: Figure out the real problem

Interview Tip: Figure out the real problem

People hire because they have a problem that needs to be solved. But a Job Description isn't a problem description. It is - at best - a rough outline of the responsibilities. So how do you figure out the underlying problem? Ask good questions. This video shows you how.
  • Interview Tip: It's not really about you...

Interview Tip: It's not really about you...

What is the purpose of an interview? Despite what most people think, it's not really about you. Instead, it all about the problem the company needs to solve. So what to do in the interview? Don't just talk about yourself. Show that you can solve their problem. This video shows you how.
  • Improve Your Influence: Start with where they are (even if that's not where you want them to be)

Improve Your Influence: Start with where they are (even if that's not where you want them to be)

"I don't understand why they don't get this!" We've all been there. It turns out, one of the first (and often most difficult) steps to influencing people is to put aside you own opinions, at least for a little bit, and start with a blank slate. This video explains why and what to do about it.
  • Improve Your Influence: Think Individuals, not Groups

Improve Your Influence: Think Individuals, not Groups

"Senior Management", "Finance", the "Project Review Board". These are all groups that can have an influence on our careers. But when it comes to influence, it's better to forget about the group itself, and rather concentrate on the individuals that make up that group. The better you understand each and every individual, the more targeted your story, the more powerful your influence.
  • A Common Resume Mistake: It's not about what you can do...

A Common Resume Mistake: It's not about what you can do...

A common mistakes people make is thinking the resume should explain what they can do. A better way is to think about it as a very specific pitch for how you can solve the company's specific problem. In short, be a hammer, not a multi-pack (that will make sense if you watch the video 🙂
  • Build Your Confidence: The Power of "Not Yet"

Confidence issues are all about the thoughts that run around in our heads. Rather than say things to yourself like "I can't do that", try adding the idea of "not yet". You'll find that saying to yourself "I can't do that yet" has a whole different impact on what happens next. This video talks more about why.
  • Improve Your Influence: Go Beyond the Decision Maker

Improve Your Influence: Go Beyond the Decision Maker

Whenever you want to influence a decision, it's helpful to look at the broader ecosystem. In addition to the decision maker, it's important to understand both the influencers and gatekeepers. This video explains those different groups and shows you how to create a strategy to get the decision you want.
  • [Webinar] Get Your Next-Level Executive Role: 6 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

[Webinar] Get Your Next-Level Executive Role: 6 Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Who this is for: Technology Senior Managers, Directors, Executive Directors, and Vice Presidents who want to break into the senior executive ranks (SVP, MD and ultimately C-Level – CTO, CIO, CISO)

This webinar is for you if:
    1. You are not sure what concrete steps you need to take to get an executive-level job
    2. You think it is taking too long to get your next promotion even though you are qualified
    3. You believe your contributions are being overlooked or undervalued
    4. You feel uncomfortable dealing with senior executives and worry about not being “part of the club”

I share simple, easy to follow, proven strategies during the workshop that you can implement right away to see immediate results in your career.
  • Don't like confrontation? Ask a question instead.

Don't like confrontation? Ask a question instead.

Do you ever feel reluctant to share your opinion? It's a classic introvert trait (and one I'm familiar with :-). At the same time, getting your voice heard is a key skill in advancing your career. One of the easiest ways to voice your opinion is to turn it into a question instead. This video shows you how.
  • Networking Ideas: Build a Relationship Chain

Networking Ideas: Build a Relationship Chain

Networking is a powerful career advancement tool. It can also be the most difficult (if not painful) one to do. Want to make it easier? Build a relationship chain. Not only does it make outreach much easier, the bonds you create are much stronger. This video explains how it works.
  • Executive Mindset: It's not a bigger job, it's a different job

Executive Mindset: It's not a bigger job, it's a different job

Are you ready for that next-level role? Many people assume that being awesome at their current role is all they need to get ahead. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. A better way is to realize that it's not just a bigger role. It's a *different* role and you need to prepare accordingly.
